Evan Holt breaks down the Synology DS1522+ 5 bay unit for small office backup, focusing on the 4U rack fit and five-drive redundancy for your team.
Evan's spec pass. This unit fits a standard 4U rack slot while supporting five drives for redundant data storage. It is designed for small office backup needs without requiring a larger chassis.
The desk job here is straightforward: you need a unit that fits a standard 4U rack slot while supporting five drives for redundant data storage. This is not a desktop toy; it is a small office backup solution that prioritizes space efficiency and drive count.
Look at the product photo to verify the five-bay configuration and the rack-mountable form factor. Ensure the title explicitly states the 5 bay capability, as this is the core promise of the Synology DS1522+ 5 bay listing.

How Evan reads a spec sheet hiding in a title
If the title will not say USB 3, watts, or port count, it does not make my short list.
- Connector and speed are visible in the Amazon title.
- Photo is from that listing.
- No mystery ‘universal’ hub with no port list.
- Rating is public when Amazon shows one.
Open the listing and count ports before you buy. I do not run a silicon lab here.

The title explicitly identifies this unit as a 4-Bay NAS, which is a critical mismatch for your requirement of five drives in a 4U slot. I cannot recommend a four-bay chassis for a five-drive redundancy job, as the physical capacity simply does not exist in this model.
In the product photo, count the vertical drive bays visible on the front panel. You will see four slots, confirming the title's claim. This visual evidence proves it fails the five-drive requirement, making it unsuitable for the specific redundant storage layout you need.
