I test PS5 controller thumb sticks to see if swapping caps fixes drift or if you need a new unit. This guide helps you decide before the stick becomes…

By Evan Holt · Computing editor · Computing desk · Gadget Evaluator Lab

Evan's spec pass. Swap the plastic caps if the drift is minor and the stick still centers. Replace the entire controller if the drift is severe or the cap falls off easily.

The desk job here is simple: stop the stick from drifting in your favorite game without spending the cost of a new controller. I look at the PS5 controller thumb sticks to see if the plastic cap is the only thing worn out.

In the product photo, check if the cap matches your DualSense model and if the listing mentions the specific stick type. You need to see the exact fit before you open the listing to avoid buying a cap that does not seat properly.

01 Joystick Replacement Cap Thumb Grips for PS5/PS4 Controller, IINE…

The IINE listing specifies 3D Analog Cap Skin Replacement for PS5 and PS4 controllers, positioning these as a direct swap for the factory plastic rather than a full hardware overhaul. This matters when the drift is minor and you want to test if a fresh surface restores your aiming consistency before spending money on a new unit.

Look at the product photo to confirm the cap height and curvature match your current sticks, as the 3D profile changes how your thumb rests on the analog stick. If the photo shows a standard dome shape, it will fit the standard PS5/PS4 stems, but verify the diameter visually to ensure it snaps onto the stick without wobble, which is the primary failure point for cheap replacements.

This 28-piece set from the catalog is marketed with 14 colors and anti-slip properties for PS4, PS5, and Xbox controllers, suggesting a bulk option for players who want to rotate textures or match their aesthetic. The silicone material is highlighted as a solution for scratch prevention and grip enhancement, which is relevant if your current plastic caps are slick or worn down.

In the listing image, check the thickness of the silicone layer; if it looks too thin, it may not provide the tactile feedback needed to stop your thumb from sliding during intense sessions. Ensure the photo clearly shows the internal stem attachment mechanism, as a loose fit is the most common reason these multi-color packs fail to hold up against the friction of daily use.

The KontrolFreek YourFriendKyle Precision Sports Baseball Kit is explicitly for PS4 and PS5 controllers, featuring a Blue and White design that mimics a baseball glove. This specific branding and shape indicate a performance-oriented accessory rather than a generic cover, aimed at players who want a distinct tactile feel for their thumb placement.

Examine the photo to see the raised texture and the specific grip pattern, as this is the key differentiator from smooth plastic caps. If the image shows a pronounced ridge or texture, it is designed to anchor your thumb more securely, which can help mitigate the sensation of drift by giving you a more stable reference point for your movements.

The FPS Freek Vortex for PS4 and PS5 is described as a performance thumbstick with a High-Rise Convex shape, signaling a significant change in the physical profile of your controller. This is not just a cosmetic swap; it is a functional modification intended to alter your aiming mechanics and comfort level.

Look closely at the product photo to gauge the height difference compared to a standard stick, as the High-Rise design requires a different thumb angle. If the image shows a steep curve, be aware that this will change your muscle memory, and you should verify that the convex shape aligns with your preferred grip style to avoid fatigue during long gaming sessions.

The Heist Edition Performance Thumbsticks for PS5 and PS4 come in a Blue/Pink colorway, offering a distinct visual identity for your controller. This specific edition suggests a focus on both aesthetics and performance, catering to players who want their setup to stand out while maintaining functional integrity.

In the listing image, verify the material finish and the grip texture, as the Heist Edition likely features a specific surface treatment for enhanced control. Check if the photo shows any additional ridges or patterns that differ from the standard Vortex, as these details can affect how securely your thumb holds the stick during rapid movements.

These Soft Silicone Joystick Caps for PS5, PS4, and Switch Pro controllers feature a Cute Cartoon design, appealing to players who prioritize visual customization over pure performance metrics. The 4-piece set is designed to cover the analog sticks with a playful aesthetic while providing a soft touch surface.

Look at the product photo to assess the flexibility of the silicone, as the 'soft' description implies a material that may compress over time. Ensure the image shows the caps fitting snugly around the stick stem, as a loose fit can lead to the caps falling off during intense gameplay, which is a common issue with softer silicone materials.

The Joystick Replacement Grip Caps for PS5 and PS4 are listed as a straightforward replacement option, focusing on restoring the original feel of the controller. This suggests a utilitarian approach, where the goal is to replace worn-out parts without adding extra features or aesthetic changes.

Check the product photo to confirm the material and finish, as a simple replacement cap should closely mimic the original plastic texture. If the image shows a matte or textured surface, it is likely designed to provide better grip than the slick factory caps, which can help reduce thumb slippage and improve overall control.

In the listing image, verify the size and shape of the caps to ensure they fit the specific stick diameter of your controller, as universal fits can sometimes be slightly loose. Look for any visual cues in the photo that indicate a secure fit, such as a reinforced stem or a textured interior, to prevent the caps from slipping off during use.

The Cat Claw design offers a unique aesthetic, appealing to players who want a distinctive look for their controller while also providing a functional grip.

Examine the product photo to see the detailed cat claw pattern, as this texture can significantly affect how your thumb interacts with the stick. If the image shows a pronounced claw shape, it may provide a more secure grip than smooth caps, but you should also check the material thickness to ensure it does not interfere with the stick's range of motion.
