I test magnetic shop vacs to keep ferrous debris from clogging filters. This guide helps you pick the right unit for grinding jobs. Short magnetic shop…

By Samir Shah · Garage and auto editor · Garage desk · Gadget Evaluator Lab

Samir on the thread. A magnetic shop vac captures ferrous debris before it reaches the filter. This prevents clogs and protects the motor during grinding.

In the bay, grinding throws fine ferrous particles that standard vacs push straight into the filter media. A magnetic shop vac intercepts that debris at the intake, keeping the airflow path clear and the motor load stable.

Before you open the listing, check the product photo for the magnetic intake assembly. Verify the drive size and thread type of the attachment to ensure it matches your existing hose or tooling.

DEWALT 20V Cordless Shop Vac, AC/DC 9 Gal Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner…

Size and thread are on the Amazon title. Do not guess them from this page.

The DEWALT 20V Cordless Shop Vac is a tool-only unit designed for the 9-gallon wet/dry capacity, relying on your existing 20V MAX battery ecosystem to handle the heavy debris load from grinding operations. The absence of a battery and charger in this SKU means you are buying the vacuum head and canister specifically to pair with your current power source, ensuring the 9-gallon volume is ready for immediate bay use without waiting for a new power delivery system.

In the product photo, verify the magnetic base plate is visible at the bottom of the canister, as this is the critical component that traps ferrous particles before they reach the internal filter. Check that the hose connection is a standard 2.5-inch diameter, which is the industry standard for high-volume dust extraction, and ensure the power cord is not included, confirming this is strictly a bare tool that requires your existing DeWalt 20V battery to function.

20V Cordless Vacuum Cleaner-Wet/Dry Shop Vac,2.6 Gallon…

Size and thread are on the Amazon title. Do not guess them from this page.

This 20V Cordless Vacuum Cleaner offers a 2.6-gallon capacity and is explicitly compatible with DeWalt batteries, making it a compact option for smaller grinding tasks where a full 9-gallon unit is overkill. The bare tool configuration means you must already own a DeWalt 20V MAX battery and charger, which limits the initial setup cost but requires you to have the specific voltage and chemistry match for the motor to spin up correctly.

Look at the photo to confirm the 2.6-gallon canister size, which is significantly smaller than the 9-gallon models, and check the filter housing to ensure it is accessible for cleaning. The photo should show the magnetic base clearly, as this is the primary defense against iron filings clogging the motor, and verify that the hose is coiled and secured, indicating a portable design rather than a wall-mounted unit.

DEWALT DXV04T Portable 4 Gallon Wet/Dry Vaccum (Yellow) and…

Size and thread are on the Amazon title. Do not guess them from this page.

The DEWALT DXV04T is a portable 4-gallon wet/dry vacuum that sits in the middle ground between the compact 2.6-gallon units and the larger 9-gallon models, offering a balance of capacity and maneuverability for a garage bay. The yellow color coding is standard for DeWalt, and the inclusion of workshop accessories in the listing suggests a ready-to-use kit rather than a bare tool, which is important for immediate deployment during grinding sessions.

In the photo, inspect the 4-gallon canister to ensure it is not the 6-gallon or 9-gallon variant, as the capacity directly affects how often you need to empty the debris. Check the filter assembly to see if it is a HEPA or standard paper filter, as the magnetic base is the first line of defense, but the filter is the final barrier before the motor, and ensure the hose is long enough to reach the grinding area without dragging.

DEWALT Portable 6 Gallon 5 Horsepower Wall-Mounted Garage Wet Dry…

Size and thread are on the Amazon title. Do not guess them from this page.

The DEWALT Portable 6 Gallon 5 Horsepower Wall-Mounted Garage Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner is designed for permanent installation, using 5 HP of power to handle the heavier debris loads from continuous grinding. The wall-mounted design frees up floor space in the bay, which is crucial when you have multiple tools and workbenches, and the 6-gallon capacity is a step up from the 4-gallon models for longer grinding sessions.

Look at the photo to confirm the wall-mount brackets are included, as this is a key feature that differentiates it from the portable 4-gallon and 9-gallon units. Check the hose length and diameter to ensure it can reach the grinding area, and verify the filter housing is accessible, as the 5 HP motor generates more suction and heat, which can clog the filter faster if the magnetic base is not cleaned regularly.

EGO Power+ Shop Vacuum Wet Dry, Car Vac, Portable Cordless…

Size and thread are on the Amazon title. Do not guess them from this page.

The EGO Power+ Shop Vacuum is a 9-gallon 110 CFM cordless cleaner that uses the EGO battery platform, offering a high-capacity option for those who are already invested in the EGO ecosystem. The 110 CFM airflow is a key specification for grinding debris, as it ensures that the fine dust and larger chips are pulled through the magnetic base and into the canister without clogging the filter.

In the photo, verify the 9-gallon canister size, which is the largest in this list, and check the magnetic base to ensure it is robust enough to hold the ferrous debris from heavy grinding. The photo should also show the battery and charger are not included, which is a critical detail for budget planning, and ensure the hose is long enough to reach the work area without needing an extension.

Dapper Supply 6-Gallon Wall-Mount Wet/Dry Vacuum, 30-Ft Hose

Size and thread are on the Amazon title. Do not guess them from this page.

The Dapper Supply 6-Gallon Wall-Mount Wet/Dry Vacuum is a 6-gallon unit with a 30-foot hose, designed for garage use where a long reach is necessary to cover the entire bay. The wall-mount design is a key feature, as it keeps the vacuum out of the way when not in use, and the 30-foot hose is a significant advantage over the shorter hoses on the portable models.

Look at the photo to confirm the 6-gallon canister size and the 30-foot hose length, which is a major differentiator from the other units in this list. Check the magnetic base to ensure it is present, as this is the primary defense against iron filings, and verify the filter housing is accessible for cleaning, as the long hose can create more resistance and clogging if the filter is not maintained.

CRAFTSMAN CMXEVBE17595 16 Gallon 6.5 Peak HP Wet Dry Shop Vacuum

Size and thread are on the Amazon title. Do not guess them from this page.

The CRAFTSMAN CMXEVBE17595 is a 16-gallon 6.5 Peak HP wet/dry shop vacuum, offering the largest capacity in this list for heavy-duty grinding and debris removal. The 6.5 Peak HP motor is a key specification, as it provides the suction power needed to handle the larger volume of debris, and the 16-gallon canister means you can run longer sessions without needing to empty the unit.

In the photo, verify the 16-gallon canister size, which is significantly larger than the 9-gallon models, and check the magnetic base to ensure it is robust enough to hold the ferrous debris from heavy grinding. The photo should also show the hose and accessories, as the larger capacity requires a more robust hose to handle the volume, and ensure the filter housing is accessible for cleaning, as the larger volume of debris can clog the filter faster.
