I test if the Echo Dot 5th gen fits a tight nightstand without blocking the outlet behind it. This guide is for shoppers checking the physical footprint…

By Evan Holt · Computing editor · Computing desk · Gadget Evaluator Lab

Evan's spec pass. The Echo Dot 5th gen has a compact, spherical design that sits low on a surface. Its small base leaves room for the power cord and the outlet behind it.

The desk job here is simple: you need a device that wakes you up and fills a small room with sound without turning your nightstand into a cluttered mess. The main concern is whether the device blocks the electrical outlet you need for your phone charger or lamp.

Before you open the listing, look at the product photo to see the spherical shape and the flat base. Check the visual scale to ensure the device is small enough to sit in front of the outlet without covering the plug.

The title specifies this stand is for the 4th and 5th Generation Echo Dot, which matters because the 49ers helmet design adds a vertical profile that standard bases do not. If your nightstand outlet is recessed or close to the edge, the helmet's brim could easily shadow the plug area.

In the product photo, check the distance between the rear of the helmet and the base plate. If the stand is a simple flat disc, the outlet might remain accessible, but if the helmet sits deep on a raised platform, you will likely need to shift the speaker forward to free up the wall space behind it.

This bundle pairs the Charcoal 5th Gen Dot with a Baby Grogu stand, a character design that typically features a rounded, bulky upper section. The title does not list specific dimensions, so the visual bulk of the Grogu figure is the primary variable for desk clearance.

Look at the photo to see if the Grogu stand has a wide, flat footprint or a narrow neck. A wide base will occupy more horizontal space on the nightstand, potentially pushing the speaker too close to the outlet, while a narrow neck allows you to slide the unit further back without the character's head interfering with the plug.

The Iron Man stand is a limited edition piece that likely has a more angular, mechanical shape than a standard round base. The title confirms it is for the 5th Gen Dot, but the specific geometry of the Iron Man armor design dictates how much clearance you have at the rear.

Examine the photo for the depth of the stand's base. If the Iron Man design includes a raised pedestal or a wide shoulder area, it may block the line of sight to the outlet. You need to see if the base is flush with the speaker or if it extends backward, which would require you to move the entire unit away from the wall to plug in the power cable.

This listing is for the Echo Dot Kids in Rainbow Swirl, which includes a built-in night light feature. The title highlights the 'Designed for Alexa+' and smart speaker function, but the physical form factor of the Kids model is distinct from the standard Charcoal version.

In the photo, verify if the Rainbow Swirl model has a larger diameter or a different base shape compared to the standard Dot. The Kids edition often has a more robust casing for durability, which could mean a wider footprint. Check if this wider base would cover the outlet if placed against the wall, or if the design allows the speaker to sit flush enough to leave the plug accessible.

The title identifies a stand from Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, a design that likely features intricate, possibly protruding elements like Jack Skellington's head or Oogie Boogie's texture. This is not a simple geometric stand, so the clearance issue is more complex.

Look closely at the photo to see if the stand has any overhanging parts or a deep base. If the Burton design includes a wide platform to support the character's shape, it will occupy more space on the nightstand. You need to determine if this extra width forces the speaker to sit further from the wall, thereby freeing up the outlet, or if it creates a barrier that blocks access to the plug.

This bundle includes a Dragon Egg stand for the Dragon-themed Kids Dot. The title specifies 'Dragon Egg Stand,' which implies a rounded, egg-shaped base rather than a flat disc. The shape of the egg will determine how it sits on the nightstand surface.

In the product photo, check the curvature of the Dragon Egg base. If it is a full sphere or a deep bowl shape, it may not sit flat against the wall, creating a gap where the outlet is still accessible. However, if the egg is flattened at the bottom for stability, it might sit too close to the wall, potentially blocking the outlet if the speaker is placed directly in front of it.

The title lists a Mandalorian Helmet Stand for the Deep Sea Blue Echo Dot. The helmet design is tall and narrow, which is different from the wider character stands. The vertical height of the helmet is the key factor here, as it may not block the outlet horizontally but could affect cable routing.

Look at the photo to see the width of the helmet's base. If the base is narrow, you can slide the speaker close to the wall without the helmet interfering with the outlet. However, if the helmet has a wide brim or a deep base, it may require more space on the nightstand, forcing you to move the speaker forward and potentially blocking the outlet behind it.

This is the standard Charcoal Echo Dot (newest model) without a specific stand bundle. The title emphasizes 'Vibrant sounding speaker' and 'Great for bedrooms,' but the physical form is the standard cylindrical shape with a flat base.

In the photo, verify the diameter of the base. The standard Dot has a relatively small footprint, which is advantageous for nightstands with limited space. Check if the base is flat enough to sit flush against the wall, which would allow you to plug in the power cable without moving the speaker forward. If the base is slightly raised or curved, it may create a gap that keeps the outlet accessible.

The title identifies this as the Echo Dot Max in Amethyst with a stand that includes USB-C charging ports. The 'Max' designation implies a larger speaker driver and potentially a larger physical body than the standard Dot. The USB-C ports on the stand add functionality but also bulk.

Look at the photo to see the size of the stand with the USB-C ports. If the ports are located on the rear or side of the stand, they may protrude and block the outlet. You need to check if the stand's footprint is significantly larger than the standard Dot, which would require more space on the nightstand and could interfere with the outlet behind it.

This bundle includes the Echo Dot Max in Graphite with a Made for Amazon Wall Mount. The title specifies a wall mount, which is a critical detail for nightstand clearance because it removes the speaker from the surface entirely.

In the photo, check the depth of the wall mount bracket. If the bracket is shallow, the speaker will sit close to the wall, potentially blocking the outlet if it is mounted directly above it. However, if the bracket has a deep arm or a gap, it may allow the outlet to remain accessible. You need to determine if the wall mount design allows for cable management that keeps the outlet clear.
